Intro to Comedy Writing 101 - Discover the FUNdamentals of comedy writing!

Welcome to our Level 1 Intro to Comedy Writing Class! This course is designed for anyone interested in learning how to write comedy. You will be guided through the fundamentals of writing by a working television writer. Level 1 is aimed at anyone wanting to explore sketch writing, stand-up, or television.

A three-hour course every Sunday 9a-12p (Nov: 3,10,17,24, and Dec. 1)

R1500 for the 5 week course

What to expect: Introduction to Comedy Writing: Starting at the very beginning we will learn how to build a joke and comedy concepts. (Triplets, Couplets, Two Peas in a Pod, etc.)

Sketch Writing Principles: We will learn the different types of sketches and begin pitching ideas. Finding Your Voice: We will work towards finding the type of humor that each student gravitates towards and how to capitalize on it.

The Writers Room: You'll learn the importance of collaboration and how to give feedback in a writers room.

Long Form: We will explore long form and alternative comedic writing.

Every student will leave the class with at least two pieces of comedic material for their portfolio.

Comedy Writing 102: "The Art of Comedy Content Creation"

A three-hour course every Sunday 12p-3p (Nov: 3,10,17, 24, and Dec. 1)

R1500 for the 5 week course

Now that we know the fundamentals, we will put them into practice. This course will allow students to work their comedy writing muscles via a writers' room style setting. Guided by their instructor, Victoria González, each student will workshop, write, and produce five types of comedy sketches (on film or for a live audience). Comedy Writing 101 course completion is a prerequisite for this class.

Victoria González is a television comedy writer living in Johannesburg on an Artist's Visa. She studied improvisation at the famous UCB Franklin Theater. Then went on to receive the diversity scholarship to study sketch writing at UCB in Los Angeles. Victoria was on a professional short form improv team and on a touring long form team before becoming a TV writer. She has gone on to write for television shows such as: Saved by the Bell, and Diary of a Future President.
